New CDC Smoking Ad Campaign Too Much for the General Public?
I have to say that the first time I watched one of the "CDC: Tips from Former Smokers" advertisement on television, I got the chills. The commercial legitimately freaked me out. The creator and producer of these ads is the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), who are trying to discourage people thinking of smoking, people who want to start up again, and people who currently are smoking (an example of one of these ads is below).
That's right! That is the commercial that freaked me out. Sure, I will give Terrie, the woman in the commercial, some major credit. It shows bravery to come on television in any way looking like that. She is doing a public service attempting to discourage potential smokers. However, I think that maybe the CDC went a bit overboard. The shock value is there, but the target audience is not. They are making everyone watch this commercial, when only 20% of everyone smokes. These commercials are not for TV in my opinion, as I think a little kid would get nightmares from this. The CDC should definitely use this technique, but not in the way they are currently using it (more information at the link below).
